It shares a border with the country of Luxembourg to the east. To the south and southwest, it touches the French departments of Ardennes, Meuse, and Meurthe-et-Moselle. To the north, it sits near the Walloon provinces of Namur and Liège. It is a very important part of the Belgian landscape.

Much of this land is filled with thick forests. About eighty percent of the province is part of the Ardennes region. The Ardennes is known for being very densely wooded. In the south, there is a specific area called Gaume or Belgian Lorraine. The main city in that southern area is Virton. The province is also divided into five administrative districts. These districts contain a total of 43 different municipalities.

The history of this place changed a long time ago. In 1830 and 1831, a meeting called the Conference of London took place. This was part of the Third Partition of Luxembourg. It happened because of the Belgian Revolution of 1830. Later, in 1839, the province was given to the new Kingdom of Belgium. This happened after King William I agreed to the terms. He was the King of the Netherlands and the Grand Duke of Luxembourg.

There are many interesting facts about the people and the land. As of January 2024, there were around 295,000 residents living there. This makes it the least populated province in Belgium. It has the lowest population density in the whole country. The largest city is Arlon, located in the south-east. Near the border, the Arelerland region has a special way of speaking. Many people there have historically spoken Luxembourgish along with Walloon.

Money and wealth can look very different in this province. In 2018, the gross domestic product was €7.0 billion. This was about 1.5% of the total economic output for Belgium. Some towns, like Arlon, are known for being quite wealthy. These towns sit right on the border of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. However, other towns in the province are among the poorest in Belgium. This means there is a big gap in income between different areas.
