It sits in the province of Hainaut, not far from the border with France. The city is located in a valley made by the Sambre river.

This river flows from the west toward the east. Many other small streams also run through the area. The Piéton river and the Eau d'Heure river both join the Sambre here. The city is the largest in Wallonia and the fourth largest in all of Belgium.

This name came from the coal mines and steel factories. Even though most factories closed after the 1950s, you can still see their marks. Huge piles of earth called slag heaps dot the land.

Some of these heaps are very tall. The Saint-Charles slag heap in the Bois du Cazier reaches 241 meters high. These mounds are now important homes for many rare plants and animals.

History tells us that people lived in this area a long time ago. During the Roman period, people built villas and temples here.
