This city is a large municipality within the Brussels-Capital Region. It is a place where many different cultures and languages meet every day.

Learning how the city grew is like looking at a puzzle. Long ago, the city was only the area inside the second set of walls. This area is now known as the Small Ring. Over time, the city expanded by adding nearby villages and lands. In 1921, the city took in Haren, Laeken, and Neder-Over-Heembeek.

The city also grew by taking narrow strips of land for big roads. One famous road is Avenue Louise, which was built to reach a large park. This history gives the city its unusual shape today.

Building the city took many years of planning and work. In 1838, leaders made a plan for the Leopold Quarter. This was a major extension to the east of the city. They wanted to create a beautiful area for people to live. They designed it using a grid pattern near Brussels Park.

Later, in 1880, the city added land to create the Parc du Cinquantenaire. This park was made to celebrate 50 years of Belgian independence.

Many people live in the City of Brussels. There are 196,828 inhabitants in the municipality. The city is legally bilingual, which means people use both French and Dutch. It is also a very diverse place with people from many different lands. About 55.84% of the people have roots from outside of Europe. Many residents come from places like Morocco, India, and Congo.

Today, the city is working on new goals for the future. It used to be known for having many tall buildings and lots of traffic. Now, leaders want to make it a much greener place to live. They have a plan to make it a "10-minute city." This means people can reach essential things in less than 10 minutes. They also want to add more green spaces for everyone to enjoy.
