It sits in the north-eastern part of the region. You can find it near the City of Brussels, Etterbeek, Evere, and Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. The area is legally bilingual, which means people use both French and Dutch. It is a very crowded place with a high population density. In fact, the density is twice the average for all of Brussels. This place has a very special nickname: "the city of donkeys." This name comes from a long time ago when people grew sour cherries here. They used donkeys to carry the heavy fruit to markets in Brussels. You can still see signs of this history today. Sour cherry trees line the streets in the Diamant Quarter. You can even find donkeys living in Josaphat Park. The name of the Diamant Quarter comes from these very trees.

History in this area goes back a very long way. Archaeologists found Stone Age flint tools in the Josaphat valley. They also found coins and tombs from the time of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. The first written record of the name Scarenbecca appeared in a document from 1120. For many years, the land was part of the Duchy of Brabant. In the 1500s, the village was much smaller with only 112 houses. By 1540, the population had grown to about 600 people.

As time passed, Schaerbeek changed from a quiet village into a booming suburb. In the late 1800s, many wealthy people moved here to build beautiful homes. Many of these buildings were designed in the Art Nouveau style. Architects like Gustave Strauven helped create these unique houses and apartments. The Municipal Hall was built in 1887 and opened by King Leopold II.

Later, the Josaphat Park was also opened by the King in 1904.

Today, Schaerbeek is known for its many different cultures. The western part is home to a large Turkish community. Some people call this area "Little Anatolia" because of the many Turkish shops.
