Water plays a huge role in this landscape. Two important rivers are the Scheldt and the Leie. These two rivers merge together in the city of Ghent. Another river called the Dender also flows through the area. The Dender merges into the Scheldt at the city of Dendermonde. Because of these rivers, there are many different regions to visit. Some areas are known for tourism, such as the Flemish Ardennes. Other special areas include the Waasland and the Meetjesland. There is also a region called the Denderstreek.

History has shaped how this province looks today. Long ago, during the Napoleonic Empire, most of this area was called the Department of Escaut. That name came from the River Scheldt. After Napoleon was defeated, the name changed. It was renamed to show it was in the eastern part of the historic County of Flanders. The province also has a special flag. It shows a black lion with a red tongue and red claws. The background has horizontal white and green stripes. You can still see the old Flemish flag on road signs.

Many people live in East Flanders. As of January 2024, the population was over 1.57 million people. In the year 1830, there were 734,000 people living there. By the year 1900, that number grew to about one million. The population grew again in the 21st century. The eastern part of the province is very crowded. This area is part of something called the Flemish Diamond. Other busy cities include Aalst, Sint-Niklaas, and Dendermonde.

East Flanders is a busy and organized place. It has a provincial council with 36 members. These members help run the province. A group of four people called the deputation forms the daily government. The leader of the province is the governor. Carina Van Cauter has been the governor since September 2020. The province also has a large yearly budget of about 300 million euro. In 2018, the gross domestic product was 56.4 billion euro. This shows how much activity happens in this part of Belgium.
