It serves as a vital part of the Flemish Region. The province is bordered by several different areas. To the north, it meets the Dutch province of Zeeland. Within Belgium, it shares borders with Antwerp, Flemish Brabant, Hainaut, and West Flanders. The province covers a total area of 2,928 square kilometers. It is organized into six administrative districts, known as arrondissements. These districts contain a total of 60 municipalities. The capital city is Ghent, which is also the second largest city in the Flemish Region.

Geography in East Flanders is defined by its important rivers and distinct regions. Two major rivers, the Scheldt and the Leie, are central to the landscape. These two rivers merge together within the city of Ghent. Another significant river is the Dender, which flows into the Scheldt at the city of Dendermonde. These water systems help create several unique geographic and tourist regions. These include the Denderstreek, Meetjesland, Waasland, and the Flemish Ardennes. The province is also divided into specific administrative districts. These include the districts of Ghent, Oudenaarde, Eeklo, Aalst, Dendermonde, and Sint-Niklaas.

The history of East Flanders shows how political changes shaped its identity. During the era of the Napoleonic Empire, the area was part of the Department of Escaut. This name was taken from the River Scheldt. After Napoleon was defeated, the name of the entity changed. It was renamed to reflect its location in the eastern part of the historic County of Flanders. The province also uses specific symbols to show its identity. The provincial flag features a black lion with a red tongue and red claws. This lion sits on a background of horizontal white and green stripes. This is a recent adaptation of the flag. Previously, the province used the Flemish flag, which shows a black lion on a yellow background. This older flag is still used publicly, such as on road signs.

Demographics in the province have changed significantly over the last two centuries. In 1830, the population was 734,000 inhabitants. At that time, it was the most populated province in Belgium. By the year 1900, the population had reached about one million people. Growth slowed down around the 1980s. However, the population began to increase again during the 21st century. As of January 2024, the population was over 1.57 million people. The population is not spread evenly across the land. The eastern part of the province is part of the Flemish Diamond. This area is more densely populated than the western part. Other notable cities include Aalst, Sint-Niklaas, and Dendermonde.

The economy of East Flanders is quite robust and active. In 2018, the Gross domestic product (GDP) was 56.4 billion euro. The GDP per capita, which is the economic output per person, was 33,000 euro. When adjusted for purchasing power, this was 109% of the EU27 average. Ghent plays a massive role in this economy because of the Port of Ghent. The city is also a center for education as the home of Ghent University.

The province manages a large yearly budget of approximately 300 million euro.

Governance in the province is handled through a structured system. The provincial council, or provincieraad, consists of 36 members. These members were last elected during the 2018 elections. In the past, the council was much larger with 72 members. The council includes several political parties. These include the N-VA, CD&V, Open VLD, sp.a, Vlaams Belang, and Groen. A smaller group of four people forms the daily government. This group is called the deputation. The deputation is currently a coalition of the N-VA, CD&V, and Groen. The entire province is led by a governor. The governor is appointed by the Flemish Government. Carina Van Cauter has served as the governor since September 1, 2020.

East Flanders connects many different social and economic systems together. Its location makes it a bridge between different Belgian provinces and the Netherlands. The mix of industrial ports and historic tourist regions creates a diverse landscape. The presence of major universities and high GDP shows its importance to the wider European economy. From its river-based history to its modern administrative structure, the province remains a central part of Flanders.
