Flemish Brabant

geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Flemish Brabant is a province located within Flanders, one of the three main regions of Belgium. It occupies a central position in the country and completely surrounds the Brussels-Capital Region. To its north, east, and south, it shares borders with several other Belgian provinces. These neighboring provinces include Antwerp, Limburg, Liège, Walloon Brabant, Hainaut, and East Flanders. The province serves as a vital part of the Belgian landscape, combining residential areas, industrial zones, and major transport hubs.

Administratively, the province is divided into two distinct districts known as arrondissements. The first is the Halle-Vilvoorde Arrondissement, which encircles the Brussels-Capital Region. This district is largely residential, but it also hosts significant industrial zones and Belgium's primary airport. The second is the Leuven Arrondissement, which is centered on the city of Leuven. Leuven is the largest city in the province and serves as its official capital. Together, these two districts contain 65 municipalities.

The current structure of Flemish Brabant is the result of a major political reorganization in 1995. Before this time, the area was part of a much larger province called Brabant. To accommodate the division of Belgium into three distinct regions—Flanders, Wallonia, and the Brussels-Capital Region—the old province was split. This process created two new provinces: Flemish Brabant and Walloon Brabant. The Brussels-Capital Region was separated to become its own entity and no longer belongs to any province. This division helped align provincial borders with the linguistic and regional identities of the country.

Language plays a significant role in the daily life and governance of the province. The official language of Flemish Brabant is Dutch, which is the standard for the Flanders region. However, the province includes certain municipalities known as municipalities with language facilities. In these specific areas, local governments are permitted to use French to communicate with their citizens. This is particularly relevant in the areas bordering Flanders and Wallonia. The Halle-Vilvoorde Arrondissement is notable because it surrounds Brussels, a city that is officially bilingual but where most inhabitants speak French.

The province is managed by a Governor, who acts as the representative for both the federal and Flemish governments. The Governor is appointed by the Flemish government following the unanimous advice of the Federal Council of Ministers. This official is responsible for supervising local authorities and ensuring that all laws and decrees are followed. The Governor also maintains public order and security and coordinates responses to any disasters that occur within the province. Flemish Brabant is unique because it is the only province that also utilizes a deputy governor. This deputy must have significant knowledge of both Dutch and French to ensure language legislation is observed in peripheral municipalities.

Governance is further supported by the Provincial Council and the Deputation. The Provincial Council consists of 72 members who are elected every six years to represent the people. These members meet in dedicated spaces, such as the Provincial Council meeting room, to conduct their business.

While the Council makes decisions, the Deputation serves as the executive organ. The Deputation is responsible for the daily administration of the province and includes the Governor and six deputies. These deputies are elected from among the members of the Provincial Council.

Flemish Brabant maintains a strong economic presence within Belgium. In 2018, the province's Gross domestic product (GDP) reached 49.8 billion €. When looking at the wealth per person, the GDP per capita adjusted for purchasing power was 38,600 €. This figure represents 128% of the average for the EU27 nations in that same year. This economic strength is supported by various industries and the presence of a major international airport. Additionally, the province is known for producing famous local goods, such as Belgian beers.

Social and cultural identity is also well-defined within the province's population. As of January 2024, the population of Flemish Brabant exceeded 1.19 million people. Data from 2008 indicates that the majority of the population identifies as Catholic, at 73.9%. About 23.1% of residents identify as non-religious, while 3% adhere to other religions. This mix of industrial activity, diverse linguistic rules, and established political structures makes Flemish Brabant a complex and central part of the Belgian state.
