The City of Brussels is a major municipality and the historical center of the Brussels-Capital Region. It serves several vital roles as the capital of Belgium and the French Community of Belgium. Furthermore, it acts as the administrative hub for the European Union. Many principal EU institutions are located within the city's European Quarter.

The municipality includes the historic center, known as the Pentagon, and several outlying areas. These include the northern districts of Haren, Laeken, and Neder-Over-Heembeek. It also extends to the Avenue Louise and the Bois de la Cambre park to the southeast.

The city's physical boundaries have changed significantly through various historical expansions. Originally, the City of Brussels was defined by the area within its second set of walls. This area is now known as the Small Ring, which serves as an inner ring road. As surrounding villages grew, they eventually formed a single, continuous urban area. While these areas became part of the city, they often maintained separate local governments. In 1921, the city officially annexed the northern municipalities of Haren, Laeken, and Neder-Over-Heembeek.

This expansion created the distinct northern bulge seen in the city's modern map.

Urban planning played a massive role in shaping the city's unique layout. In 1838, an official plan was created for the Leopold Quarter. This was the first major eastern extension of the City of Brussels. The area was designed with a classical grid pattern centered around the Place Royale. This development followed the transfer of land from the municipality of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. Later, in 1853, the city purchased half of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode after its administration went bankrupt. This area is now known as the Squares Quarter.

One of the most unusual parts of the city's shape resulted from a dispute over transportation. In 1844, planners proposed the Avenue Louise as a monumental, tree-lined road. This avenue was intended to connect the city center to the Bois de la Cambre park. However, the neighboring municipalities of Saint-Gilles and Ixelles resisted the project for many years. The City of Brussels eventually annexed a narrow strip of land to complete the avenue. This annexation occurred in April 1864 and included the Bois de la Cambre itself. This decision caused the municipality of Ixelles to be split into two separate areas.

The city also expanded to create spaces for public celebration and leisure. In 1880, the city attached land from Etterbeek to create the Parc du Cinquantenaire. This area was designed as an exhibition space to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Belgian independence. Today, the park contains various museums and leisure facilities. The city's demographics are also quite diverse, with a population of 196,828 inhabitants. The municipality is legally bilingual, meaning both French and Dutch are official languages.

Demographic data shows that the City of Brussels is a highly international location. A large portion of the population consists of immigrants from both EU and non-EU nations. Specifically, 55.84% of the population is of non-European origin, including people from Morocco, India, and Congo. Additionally, 27.21% of the population is of European origin other than Belgian. This includes many residents from France, Romania, Italy, Spain, and Poland. Only 16.94% of the population is of solely native Belgian ancestry. This high level of diversity is a defining characteristic of the urban environment.

Looking toward the future, the city is undergoing a significant environmental transformation. In the past, Brussels had a reputation for being a city of concrete and heavy traffic. Now, the authorities are working to make the city more sustainable and green. One major goal is to create a "10-minute city." This concept aims to make all essential urban facilities accessible within a ten-minute walk or ride. The city also plans to implement a circular, low-carbon economy.

Throughout its history, the city has honored many notable figures through honorary citizenship. These individuals include world leaders like Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle. It also includes cultural figures such as the creator of Asterix, Albert Uderzo. The city's identity is further reflected in its traditional heraldry and symbols. The city's flag features Saint Michael, the patron saint of Brussels, slaying a dragon.
