It covers a total area of 1,097 square kilometres. The province is bordered by several other Belgian areas. To the north, it meets the province of Flemish Brabant. It also shares borders with the provinces of Liège, Namur, and Hainaut. As of January 2024, the population was approximately 414,000 people. While Wavre serves as the provincial capital, the municipality of Braine-l'Alleud is slightly more populous.

The names of the province have very deep roots in history. The term "Walloon" comes from an old West Germanic word. This word was reconstructed as *walh, meaning a foreigner or a speaker of Celtic or Latin. The name "Brabant" comes from the Old Dutch term *brākbant. This name likely combines roots meaning "fallow" and "district." These names are much older than the modern political borders we see today. They were used in the region even when political boundaries were very different.

Historical records show how people viewed the region in the past. In 1628, a writer named Louis de Haynin described the area. He noted that the distinction between Walloon and Flemish regions was based on language. He observed that Walloons spoke French. At that time, "Belgium" referred to a much larger area than the modern country. It included the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and parts of France. De Haynin also noted that the term "Flemish" was used to describe many different Dutch dialects.

The modern province of Walloon Brabant was created in 1995. Before this, it was part of the larger Province of Brabant. The province was split into three distinct parts. These were Walloon Brabant, Flemish Brabant, and the Brussels Capital Region. This change happened to help with the federalisation of Belgium. This process organized the country into three official regions: Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels. One significant historical event that occurred in this province was the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815.

Administratively, the province is organized into one single district. This is known as the arrondissement of Nivelles. This district contains 27 different municipalities. The province is also known for its significant economic strength. In 2018, the regional Gross domestic product, or GDP, was 19.3 billion euros. Although this is only 4.2% of Belgium's total economic output, the province is very wealthy. In fact, it is the wealthiest province in the Wallonia region. The GDP per capita in 2018 was €42,300, which was 140% of the EU27 average.

Several factors contribute to this high level of wealth. Many residents of Walloon Brabant work in the nearby Brussels Capital Region. This connection to the capital helps drive the local economy. The province also hosts important industrial and scientific sites. For example, the Louvain-la-Neuve Science Park is a major hub for development.

This park covers 231 hectares across Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve and Mont-Saint-Guibert. It contains 135 innovative companies and employs 4,500 people. The park focuses on fields like life sciences, fine chemistry, and engineering.

Other specific industries also play a vital role in the region. The company GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals has large sites in Rixensart, Wavre, and Gembloux. This company is a global leader in manufacturing vaccines. It is responsible for supplying around 25% of the world's vaccines. The scale of their work is massive, distributing 36 doses every second. Additionally, the province features the Ronquières inclined plane. This structure on the Brussels-Charleroi Canal helps connect canal traffic to the Port of Antwerp.
