The geography of West Flanders is defined by its relationship to the sea. The province features a North Sea coast followed by a very flat polder landscape. A polder is a low-lying area of land. Much of this land is reclaimed from the sea. The main rivers flowing through the region are the Leie and the IJzer. Most of the province is level and flat. However, the southern region contains some small hills. The highest point in the province is the Kemmelberg.

West Flanders shares borders with several different regions and countries. To the northeast, it borders the Dutch province of Zeeland. To the west, it borders the French department of Nord. In the south, it meets the Walloon province of Hainaut. To the east, it is adjacent to the Flemish province of East Flanders. Because of its location, it is the only Belgian province that borders both France and the Netherlands.
