It sits in a valley by the Svislach River. Another river called the Nyamiha flows there, too, but it is now underground. About two million people live in this busy city. This makes Minsk the 11th-most populous city in all of Europe.

It is also a center for groups like the Eurasian Economic Union.

People have many ideas about how the city got its name. One theory is that it comes from a Russian word meaning to barter or exchange. This might mean the name refers to an old marketplace.

Another idea is that the name comes from the Menka River. This river is a small part of the Ptsich River system. The name has different spellings in Russian, Polish, and Belarusian.

The city has a very long history that began a long time ago. It was first mentioned in a record from the year 1067.

In those early days, the town had walls made of wood. Later, it became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1242. By 1499, the city was granted special town privileges. It later became part of the Russian Empire in 1793.

In the 1800s, the city began to grow and change quickly. New roads and railways were built to connect Minsk to other places.

By 1860, the city was a major place for trading. In 1872, the city got a water supply, and a telephone arrived in 1890. By 1900, there were 58 factories in the city. At that time, the population was growing toward 91,494 people.

During the Second World War, the city faced very hard times. Much of the city was destroyed and turned to rubble.

By 1944, the population had dropped to only 50,000 people. After the war, the city was rebuilt with grand buildings. These new structures have wide streets and large squares. Today, you can see this style in the architecture of the city center.
