Long ago, Gomel was a strong fortified place. The high banks of the Sozh River helped protect it. The city was part of the Gomel Principality. It was also part of the Principality of Chernigov. In the 12th and 13th centuries, it had many crafts. It was a busy spot for trading goods.

Traders used paths to connect the city to other places. This helped the town grow in those early years.

Many different groups ruled the city over the centuries. In 1335, the area joined the Great Duchy of Lithuania. Later, it became part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1569.

During this time, the city saw many battles and attacks. It was fought over by Cossacks and other forces. In 1772, Gomel became part of the Russian Empire. This change led to a new era of growth for the city.

Growth happened very fast during the 1800s. New railways were built in the late 19th century. The Libau–Romny Railway opened in 1873. The Polesia railway opened in 1888.

These tracks made Gomel a major hub for trains. Many businesses moved there to build factories. By 1913, the city had 104,500 people living in it. It became a place for making metal and wood goods.

The city has faced very difficult times in its history. During World War II, the city was occupied by German forces.

Much of the city was destroyed during the war. The population dropped to fewer than 15,000 people. Later, the Chernobyl disaster caused radiation problems in the area.
