Vitebsk

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Vitebsk is a large city in north-eastern Belarus. It is the fourth-largest city in the whole country.

The city sits where the Vitba river flows into the Western Dvina river. This spot is very important for the local geography. A bridge called the Kirov Bridge spans the river here. The city is also home to the Vitebsk Vostochny Airport. Many people live there, with 358,927 inhabitants as of 2025. The weather is warm in summer but can be cold in winter.

History tells us that Vitebsk began at a river harbor. Some stories say Princess Olga of Kiev founded it in 974. Other historians think it might have started even earlier, in 947. Long ago, it was a vital stop on a trade route. This path connected the Varangians to the Greeks. In the 12th century, it became a center for trade and commerce. It even became its own independent principality for a time. The city grew because it sat at the crossroads of river routes.

Over many centuries, different lands ruled the city. It was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1320. By 1569, it became part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The city even had special rules called Magdeburg rights in 1597. However, Vitebsk faced many hard times and many fires. It was almost destroyed by wars in 1654 and 1708. Later, the Russian Empire took control of the city in 1772.

Even after these struggles, the city was rebuilt in a new style.

World War II was a very difficult time for the people. Nazi German forces occupied the city from 1941 to 1944. Much of the old city was destroyed during the fighting. Many Jewish people lived in the city before the war. A famous painter named Marc Chagall was one of them. After the war, the city worked hard to rebuild itself. They built new factories and a tall TV tower in 1959.
