It sits right on the banks of the Berezina River. The name of the city might come from a special word. This word means "beaver" in the Belarusian language. Long ago, many beavers lived in the Berezina River.

Today, the city is a major center for many different jobs. It has a huge timber mill and many metal factories. There are also many roads and railroads that connect it to other places like Minsk and Gomel.

The city has a very long and interesting history. Archaeologists found stone tools that show people lived here in the Stone Age. In the 14th century, a castle was built on a hill near the river.

For many years, Babruysk was a place for trade and military defense. It had a large market with nearly one hundred stalls. Skilled workers like blacksmiths and bakers lived there too. In the 1600s, the population was between 2,000 and 5,000 people. Later, a massive fortress was built to protect the area.

The city was left in ruins when the war ended in 1944. The population dropped from 84,107 people to just 28,352. It was a very difficult job to fix everything. Thousands of workers had to clear away rubble and fix broken factories. They worked hard to make the city livable again.

After the war, the city grew very quickly. Many people moved from the countryside into the city to find work. By 1989, the population had reached 232,000 people. Today, there are 205,502 people living in Babruysk.
