It sits along the banks of the Berezina River. The city serves as the administrative center for the Babruysk District. However, the city is administratively separate from the district itself. Babruysk is a major hub for transportation in the region. It sits at the intersection of several important railroads and roads. These routes connect the city to places like Minsk, Gomel, and Mogilev.

The name of the city has a connection to nature. It likely comes from the Belarusian word for beaver. This word is "babr." Historically, many beavers lived in the Berezina River.

By the end of the 19th century, beavers were almost gone from the area. This happened because of hunting and pollution. Today, the beaver remains a symbol of the city. You can even find a statue of a beaver in the city center.

Archaeological evidence shows that people have lived here for a very long time. Investigators found stone tools and weapons in the area. These findings suggest human presence dating back to the Stone Age. By the middle of the 14th century, the city was mentioned in written records. During this time, it was part of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. The city served as a fortified border post and a major trade center.

In the 17th century, the population was between 2,000 and 5,000 people. The city featured a market with nearly one hundred stalls. This market supported many skilled tradesmen, such as blacksmiths and goldsmiths.

A massive fortress was a central part of the city's history. Construction on a new fortress began in 1810. This structure was meant to mark the border between Russia and other nations. In 1812, the fortress successfully repelled an attack by Napoleon's forces for four months. The building process continued and was completed in 1820.

The fortress used wooden walls and earth barriers. It also included almost a dozen two-story watchtowers. Today, this historic site is a major attraction for tourists.

The city faced extreme hardship during the 20th century. In 1902, a Great Fire destroyed much of the city. This event left 2,500 families homeless and caused massive property damage. Later, during World War II, German troops captured the city in 1941. The occupation brought terrible suffering to the local population. Many Jews were killed in the city, and others were held in labor camps.

The Red Army liberated the city on June 29, 1944. The war left the city in ruins. The population had dropped from 84,107 in 1939 to only 28,352 after the war.

Rebuilding the city was a massive task for many workers. They cleared rubble and filled in craters caused by bombings. By the end of 1944, the machine building plant was working again. The population began to grow quickly due to urbanization. People moved from rural areas into the city for work. In 1959, the population was 96,000. By 1989, it had grown to 232,000 people. Today, the population of Babruysk is 205,502.
