The city is a key part of a large area called the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion.

Many people live and work in this busy area. In January 2022, the city itself had 195,278 inhabitants. The wider metropolitan area is much larger. On January 1, 2008, that area had 749,110 people.

If you include the outer commuter zone, the population reaches 810,983. This large group lives across 52 different municipalities. Liège is the third most populous urban area in all of Belgium.

The history of Liège goes back a very long time. It was first mentioned in the year 558 as Vicus Leudicus.

For hundreds of years, it was ruled by prince-bishops. These leaders made the city a center for learning and religion. In the Middle Ages, the city was part of the Holy Roman Empire. It even had a very democratic system with 32 different guilds. These groups shared power to run the local government.

Liège has seen many big changes and battles. In the 1800s, it became a huge center for making steel. This helped the region grow into a strong industrial area.

During World War I, the city used twelve strong forts for defense. These forts fought against the German army in 1914. Even though the forts were damaged by heavy guns, they helped slow the invasion. The city later received the Légion d'Honneur for its brave resistance.

Today, Liège remains a vital hub for culture and business. It is the main economic center for the Wallonia region.
