King Tairrdelbach Ua Conchobair built this fort in 1124. He used it as a naval base for his fleet. Later, Richard Mor de Burgh captured the fort in the 1230s. A new town grew around the site of the old fort. The name Galway comes from the Irish name Gaillimh. This was the name of the river at the western boundary.
