It sits in the province of Munster and is part of the Mid-West region. The city is built along the River Shannon, which is a very important waterway.

The historic heart of the city is found on King's Island. This island is tucked between the Shannon and the Abbey Rivers. At this spot, the river widens into the Shannon Estuary before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. To the south lies the Golden Vale, a place with very rich pastureland.

The way the city is laid out has changed many times. In the past, much of its work came from the nearby farms. Today, the city is managed by the Limerick City and County Council. This group looks after things like roads, libraries, and local planning. In 2014, the city and county joined together to form one large area. This new district stretches from Patrickswell in the west to Castleconnell in the east.
