Leinster is a province in the east of Ireland. It is one of four provinces on the island.

The province is an officially recognised part of the country. It is even listed on international codes as a subdivision of Ireland. While it does not have a role in local government, it is a very important region. Many people know it as a place with a long history and a busy population. The traditional flag of Leinster shows a golden harp on a green background.

Leinster is made up of twelve different counties. These are Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, and Wicklow. It has more counties than any other province in Ireland. However, it is the second smallest province when you look at land area. The province is home to many different types of places. Dublin is the only official city in the province. It is by far the largest settlement for people to live in.

History tells us that the province grew over many years. Long ago, it was made of ancient kingdoms like Meath, Leinster, and Osraige. During the time of Gaelic Ireland, the area was much smaller. It did not include places like the Viking cities of Wexford and Dublin. Later, the Norman invasion in the 12th century changed things. The areas of Meath and Leinster began to merge together. This happened partly because of an area called the Pale. Over time, the borders shifted as new lands were added.

There are many interesting facts about the people and the land. In 2022, the population was 2,858,501 people. This makes Leinster the most populous province in the country. Most people there speak English every day. However, there is an active group of Irish speakers too. In 2011, there were 18,947 people who spoke Irish outside of school. Some people live in a small area called Ráth Chairn where Irish is the main language. There are also many students learning Irish in special schools.

Leinster is also a very active place for sports. Many groups use the name of the province for their teams. You can find organisations for Leinster Rugby and Leinster Cricket. There are also groups for Leinster Hockey and Leinster GAA. Even though the teams are usually from the twelve counties, sometimes other teams play in their championships. This shows how the province connects to many different activities. It is a place where history, people, and sports all come together.
