geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Ireland is divided into four large areas called provinces. These are Connacht, Leinster, Munster, and Ulster.

Even though they are used for culture today, they were once very important for ruling the land. The Irish word for province actually means "a fifth."

This suggests there might have been five parts in the past. Some people believe Meath was once that fifth province. The borders changed many times over the years. Finally, the administration of James I set the borders in 1610.

Long ago, Ireland was known as the Pentarchy. This means it was made of five independent kingdoms.

These kingdoms were ruled by kings of equal rank. No single king ruled over all the others. The five parts included Ulster, Connacht, Munster, Tara, and Dinn Riogh. Each had its own royal seat or center. For example, the royal seat of Ulster was at Emain Macha. The kings of Tara and Dinn Riogh were said to come from the same family. They ruled over the people known as the Laigin.

Old legends tell many stories about these early times. The Ulster Cycle is a famous set of tales.

One story is set during the reign of King Conchobar. This was believed to happen in the 1st century. Some stories say the five parts began after a king named Conaire Mór was slain. Others say it happened when his father died. Historians say these divisions are part of very old history. These myths helped shape how people thought about Ireland for centuries.

In the early medieval period, the land had many layers of rulers. A province was ruled by a king of over-kings. This person was also called a king of a fifth.

Under them were smaller kingdoms that were like modern counties. These were ruled by overkings. Below them were even smaller groups called túath. These were ruled by a king or a leader. By the 10th century, many leaders were called lords instead of kings. This created a pyramid of power across the land.

Many different groups fought to control these lands over time. The Three Collas are famous figures from an old myth. They were said to be the sons of Eocaidh Doimlén. They fought seven battles against the Ulaid people. After these battles, they founded the kingdom of Airgíalla. This kingdom covered parts of modern Armagh, Fermanagh, Londonderry, Monaghan, and Tyrone. Later, the Normans arrived in Ireland in 1170. This changed the kingdoms and helped create the modern counties we see today. The old provinces remain as important pieces of Irish history.
