In the past, things were different. The Irish word for province means "a fifth." This suggests there were once five parts. Some people think Meath was the fifth part. In old legends, there were five kingdoms. These were called the Pentarchy. Each kingdom had its own king. These kings were of equal rank. They did not follow one single ruler.

These stories are part of old tales. One famous tale is the Ulster Cycle. It tells of heroes and battles. Over many years, the borders changed. In 1610, the borders were set for good. Today, the provinces do not run the government. They do not have political power. Instead, they are part of Irish culture. They help people remember their history and their roots.
