The name Aarhus comes from two Old Norse words. One word means "river" and the other means "mouth." This describes exactly where the city began. The urban population was 301,049 in the year 2025.

This city grew through trade and changes in how people lived. In the early days, it was a hub for sea trade. The location helped ships move between different lands. Later, the Industrial Revolution helped the city grow even more. Factories with steam machines made the city very productive.

In 1862, the first railway in Jutland was built there. This connected Aarhus to other places like Randers. The city also moved its harbor to the coast in the 1840s. This allowed larger ships to bring more goods to the city.

History shows that Aarhus is a very old settlement. It began as a small town in the late 8th century.
