The city has a very long history. Long ago, it was a center for learning and religion. It was also ruled by prince-bishops. In the 1800s, Liège became a major center for making steel. This helped the region grow very fast.

During World War I, the city fought hard to defend itself. It had twelve strong forts to stop invaders. These forts helped slow down the German army.

Today, Liège is still an important center for culture and business in its region.
