The city is part of a big metropolitan area. It is also one of the largest cities in the Caribbean region. The Almendares River flows through the city from south to north. It enters the Straits of Florida just west of the bay.

The city is made of three main parts. These are Old Havana, Vedado, and the newer suburban districts.

The big bay is divided into three harbors called Marimelena, Guanabacoa, and Antares. Havana has a tropical climate, which means it stays warm. Many people visit the city every year to see its sights. In 2010, over one million international tourists visited Havana. This was a 20% increase from the year 2005. The city is famous for its history, culture, and many monuments.

Havana has a very long and interesting history. Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar first founded the town in 1514. At first, it was located on the opposite coast. That early settlement failed because the land was swampy. In 1519, the city moved to its current spot by the bay. Pánfilo de Narváez gave it the name San Cristóbal de la Habana. This name honors the patron saint of the city.

The Spanish Empire used the city as a very important place. It became the capital of the island in 1552.

Because Havana was a busy trading port, it faced many dangers. Pirates and French corsairs often attacked the city to take goods.

A French pirate named Jacques de Sores burned the city in 1555. To stay safe, the Spanish built strong walls and many forts. These defenses helped protect the city from naval attacks. The city was even called the "Key to the New World." In the 1700s, Havana became a very busy shipyard. It was the only drydock in the New World at that time.
