They stretch across the border between France and Spain. The small country of Andorra sits right in the middle of the range. The mountains go from the Cantabrian Mountains all the way to the Mediterranean coast.

The highest point in the whole range is the peak of Aneto.

This mountain range is part of a much larger group called the Alpine System.

Scientists say these mountains are older than the Alps. Long ago, the mountains were near a land called Gondwana. About 100 to 150 million years ago, the Bay of Biscay began to spread out. This movement pushed Spain against France. The intense pressure pushed up the Earth's crust to create the mountains we see today. Most of the range is made of granite rock. This rock is very strong and does not wear away easily.

Many old stories explain how the mountains got their name. One Greek myth tells of a princess named Pyrene. In the story, the hero Hercules felt great sadness for her. He cried her name so loudly that the mountains echoed back. Other stories say the name comes from the Greek word for fire. A historian named Diodorus Siculus said herdsmen once left a fire burning. The fire burned the land for many days, and the mountains were named for it.
