Geographically, the city is nestled at the foot of several mountains. These include Beshtau, Mashuk, and three other outliers of the Caucasus Mountains. These peaks provide protection for the city on its northern side. To the south, the snow-covered summits of Mount Elbrus are visible. The city serves as the administrative center for the North Caucasian Federal District. Since January 19, 2010, it has held this important administrative role.

The name Pyatigorsk is derived from fused Russian words meaning "five mountains." This name refers specifically to the five peaks of the Beshtau mountain. In Turkic, the word Beshtau also means "five mountains." The city is a vital part of the Caucasian Mineral Waters region. This area is famous for its natural mineral springs. These springs have been a central part of the city's identity for centuries. The presence of these waters has shaped the local economy and the growth of nearby settlements. These include Goryachevodsk, Kislovodsk, Yessentuki, and Zheleznovodsk.

Historical records show that interest in these waters is very old. The 14th-century Arabian traveler Ibn Battuta provided the earliest known mention of the springs. Later, Peter the Great fostered the first scientific studies of these waters. Although his expedition collected data, that specific information has not survived. Modern interest grew in the late 18th century. In 1780, the Konstantinogorskaya fortress was erected at Mt. Mashuk. This marked the foundation of the first Russian settlement in the area. By 1803, the location had developed into a health resort. On April 24, Alexander I signed a decree making the mineral waters state property.

The city has experienced significant historical events and changes. During the Russian Empire, it was the capital of the Pyatigorsky Otdel of the Terek Oblast. During World War II, the German Wehrmacht occupied the city. In 1942, the Einsatzgruppe D had its headquarters there. This occupation resulted in the killing of many Jewish inhabitants in the region. The city is also tied to famous literary history. The Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov was killed in a duel here on July 27, 1841.

A museum and a state memorial estate now preserve his memory. The estate includes his small house and the site of the duel.

Today, the economy of Pyatigorsk is heavily oriented toward the health resort industry. In 1991, the health resort included ten sanatoria and several boarding houses. A sanatorium is a facility used for medical treatment and relaxation. The city also maintains a diverse industrial base. This includes a food industry with meat-processing, dairy, and brewery plants. Textile factories produce clothing, shoes, and carpets. The machine industry includes Pyatigorskselmash, which makes equipment for aviculture. Aviculture is the practice of raising birds. There are also chemical and ceramics factories that produce decorative items like porcelain vases and samovars.

The climate in Pyatigorsk is classified as humid continental. This means there are no sharp fluctuations in daily or annual temperatures. Summers are typically warm, while winters last for two to three months and can be cold. Spring is a cool season with a sharp transition into summer. The fall season is characterized as warm, dry, and long. On average, the city experiences ninety-eight sunny days throughout the year. This predictable weather pattern supports the local tourism and health industries.

Visitors to Pyatigorsk can explore several notable landmarks. The Aeolian harp is a stone pavilion built in a classical style in 1828. Another site is Diana's grotto, which was built in 1830. This grotto was constructed to honor the first ascent of Mount Elbrus. The city's importance is even recognized in space, as an asteroid was named after it. In 1972, Soviet astronomer Tamara Smirnova discovered Asteroid 2192 Pyatigoriya. This connection links the local geography to the broader study of astronomy.
