A promontory is a raised piece of land. It sticks out into low land or water.

If it sticks into water, we call it a peninsula. One type is a headland, or a head.

These landforms are very important to our world. They change how we see the land and water.

There are two main ways these landforms form. Sometimes, a hard ridge of rock stays in place. The softer rock around it wears away over time.

This leaves the hard rock sticking out. Other times, high ground stays between two river valleys. This happens where two rivers meet at a confluence. A confluence is just a place where rivers join.

People have used these spots for a long time. Promontories offer a natural defense against enemies. They are often surrounded by water. This makes them very difficult to reach.

Because of this, many people built forts there. They used the land to stay safe. Ancient and modern castles use this trick often.

The Citadel of Namur is a famous example. It is located in Belgium. This fort sits at the confluence of two rivers. The Meuse and Sambre rivers meet there.

These rivers act like a natural moat. A moat is a ditch filled with water. This makes it hard for enemies to enter. The site has been a fortified location since the 10th century.

Other forts show how useful these spots are. Fort Pitt was built by the English in America. It sits where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet. This area later became Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

In Ireland, the ancient Celts built forts on headlands. They used isolated peninsulas to stay safe. In Somalia, the town of Ras Bar Balla was also a promontory fort. It was part of the Ajuran Sultanate during the Middle Ages.
