Power Rangers

Power Rangers is a massive American media franchise built around superhero television series. It first debuted on August 28, 1993, with the show Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Produced by Saban Entertainment, the series became a massive hit in television ratings and toy sales. This success helped establish the brand as a permanent part of global pop culture. The franchise has since expanded into theatrical films, comic books, novels, and video games. It has produced 30 seasons of television between 1993 and 2023. A franchise reboot is currently being developed to continue the legacy.

The core mechanism of the series involves a process called morphing. Each series features a team of youths recruited and trained by a mentor. These heroes morph into the Power Rangers to gain special abilities. When morphed, they wear color-coded, skin-tight spandex suits and helmets with opaque visors. These suits are mostly identical, though they vary by color and helmet design. Morphing provides enhanced strength, durability, and agility. Some Rangers also gain superhuman or psychic abilities, such as super-speed, invisibility, or element manipulation.

Combat in the series occurs on two distinct scales. First, Rangers engage in ground fighting using common weaponry and unique individual weapons. If the antagonist becomes too large, the Rangers deploy Zords. Zords are immense assault machines that the Rangers pilot to fight massive enemies. These giant robot battles are a hallmark of the franchise. Most Ranger teams consist of three to five members, though more may join later. Certain colors, such as Red and Blue, appear in every single team.

There are specific rules and conventions that the Rangers must follow. Generally, they may not use their powers for personal gain. They are also forbidden from using their powers to escalate a fight unless the enemy does so first. Another major rule is that they must not disclose their identities to the public. In some series, such as Power Rangers S.P.D., the Rangers are public servants like police officers. These characters may disregard the rule regarding identity secrecy. Disobeying these core conventions can result in the loss of their powers.

The production of Power Rangers relies on a unique adaptation process. The series adapts characters and footage from the Japanese tokusatsu franchise, Super Sentai. This is not a simple English dub or translation. Instead, producers use extensive localization to fit American culture and television standards. They splice scenes of English-speaking actors with Japanese action footage. This footage often features Japanese actors dubbed into English. Original fight scenes are sometimes filmed to include items or characters unique to the American production.

The history of the franchise began with Haim Saban's interest in Japanese television. In 1985, Saban saw the series Choudenshi Bioman while traveling in Japan. He was fascinated by the concept of masked heroes in spandex suits. Although his 1985 pilot was rejected, his idea succeeded in 1992 through Fox Kids. The name "Power Rangers" was created during a brainstorming session with Bandai executives. They wanted a name that evoked the characters' transformation sequences. The term "Zord" was also chosen to suggest both a sword and dinosaurs.

The franchise has seen significant commercial and corporate shifts over the decades. By 2001, the franchise had generated over $6 billion in toy sales. The Walt Disney Company acquired the franchise in 2001 as part of a buyout. Disney later moved production from Los Angeles to Studio West in New Zealand. In 2010, Haim Saban bought the franchise back from Disney for $43 million. In 2018, the American toy company Hasbro acquired the franchise for $522 million.

Today, the franchise continues to evolve through new platforms and partnerships. In 2021, the series began moving to streaming services like Netflix. This marked a shift from traditional broadcast television to exclusive online premieres. The franchise remains a complex system of international cooperation between companies like Hasbro and Toei Company. While the core themes of teamwork and heroism remain, the technology and delivery methods continue to change. This allows the brand to reach new generations of viewers worldwide.
