society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A poll tax is a set fee. Every person must pay the same amount. It does not matter if you are rich or poor. This can be very hard for poor people. For example, a $100 tax is easy for a rich person. But it is very hard for someone with little money.

Many leaders used this tax in the past. In England, leaders used it to pay for wars. In the 1300s, a tax led to the Peasants' Revolt. This was a large protest by people. In the 1600s, leaders used it again. Many people paid based on their rank. Dukes paid a lot. Other people paid much less.

In the United States, some states used poll taxes for voting. This made it hard for many people to vote. This was not fair. In Canada, a tax was used on people from China. It was meant to stop them from coming to the country. This tax was later ended.

In the 1900s, Margaret Thatcher used a poll tax in the United Kingdom. Many people did not like it. In other places, people fought to make things fairer.
