In the past, many people could not vote. Some lands only let men with wealth vote. Other places used religion to pick voters. Many people fought to change these rules.

Women also worked for the right to vote. In 1893, New Zealand let adult women vote.

In 1894, South Australia let women vote and run for office. In 1906, Finland gave women full rights. The first female members of parliament were elected there in 1907.

In the United States, things were not always fair. After the Civil War, Black men gained the right to vote. But many states used unfair rules to stop them. This lasted until the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In South Africa, non-White people could not vote in national elections until 1994.

Today, more people can vote than ever before. The European Parliament is even elected this way.
