Taiwan is a place with a very unique way of governing its people. Officially, it is called the Republic of China, or the ROC. The government uses a special system with five different parts. This idea was first imagined by a man named Sun Yat-sen in 1906. One part is the Executive Yuan, which handles the work of running the country. Another part is the Legislative Yuan, where laws are made. The judiciary is also independent, which means it works on its own. There is also the Examination Yuan to check on government workers. Finally, the Control Yuan inspects how the government operates.

Today, two main political parties lead most of the discussions in Taiwan. The first is the Kuomintang, which is often called the KMT. The KMT generally wants to keep the current system and work with mainland China. The second major group is the Democratic Progressive Party, or the DPP. The DPP favors making Taiwan a separate republic. This is a big topic for the people living there. Both parties play a huge role in how the islands are run.

History shows that Taiwan has changed many times over the years. Long ago, from 1683 to 1895, it was ruled by the Qing dynasty. After a war, Japan ruled Taiwan until 1945. Then, the government of the Republic of China took control. In 1949, the government moved from mainland China to Taiwan. For a long time, the country was under martial law. This lasted for 38 years and was one of the longest in the world. During this time, it was very hard for people to disagree with the leaders.

Things began to move toward democracy in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1987, the government finally lifted the martial law rules. This allowed new political parties to become legal. In 1991, President Lee Teng-hui made a big change in how the government viewed mainland China. By 1996, the people of Taiwan could vote directly for their president. This was a very important moment for their freedom. In the year 2000, Chen Shui-bian won the presidency. He was the first person from an opposition party to win.

Taiwan is made up of many different pieces of land. It includes the main island of Taiwan and several other islands. These include Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu. There are also smaller places like Taiping Island in the South China Sea. The government organizes these areas into cities and counties. Six large cities are called special municipalities. These include Taipei, Kaohsiung, New Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, and Taoyuan. The rest of the land is split into 3 cities and 13 counties.
