In 2000, Chen won a very important election. He became the fifth president of the Republic of China. This was a huge change for Taiwan. The Kuomintang party had ruled for 55 years before him. Chen won with 39% of the vote. This happened because the other major party was split.

He promised to be a president for all the people. He also pledged not to change national symbols if peace was kept.

Being president was a very hard job for Chen. His policies were often blocked by the legislature. This group was controlled by the opposition KMT party. He also faced a big fight over a nuclear power project. In 2004, he won reelection by a very narrow margin. This happened the day after he survived a shooting while campaigning.

A man named Chen Yi-hsiung was the only suspect in that case. The case was officially closed in 2005.

Later, Chen faced serious legal trouble. In 2009, he and his wife, Wu Shu-chen, were convicted of bribery. A court sentenced him to 19 years in Taipei Prison. This was a reduction from a life sentence. He was later granted medical parole in 2015.
