People have lived on Taiwan for at least 25,000 years. Around 6,000 years ago, farmers from southeast China arrived. These farmers are the ancestors of the indigenous peoples. Later, the Dutch East India Company arrived in the 1600s. They built Fort Zeelandia on a coastal sandbar.

During this time, many Chinese farmers came to work the land. They grew rice for food and sugar to sell. Other people hunted deer to export to other places.

History brought many different rulers to the island. The Qing dynasty took control of Taiwan in 1683. In 1895, the island was given to the Empire of Japan. After Japan surrendered in World War II, the Republic of China took control. In 1949, the government of the Republic of China moved to Taiwan. This happened after they lost control of mainland China during a civil war.

Since then, Taiwan has grown very quickly. This fast growth is sometimes called the "Taiwan Miracle." In the 1990s, the country moved from a one-party state to a democracy. Now, people elect their own presidents.

Today, Taiwan is a very important place for global business.

The political status of Taiwan is a complex subject. The official name is the Republic of China. However, most people around the world call it Taiwan.

Because of political disagreements, Taiwan uses the name "Chinese Taipei" at the Olympic Games. The People's Republic of China claims Taiwan as its own. This makes international relations a difficult task. Taiwan has official diplomatic ties with 11 UN member states. Many other countries keep unofficial ties through special offices. These offices work like embassies to help people connect.
