The Taiwan independence movement is a big political debate. Some people want Taiwan to be a separate, sovereign state. This means they want it to be its own country with its own rules. Other people want Taiwan to stay part of China. This is often called the "One China" policy. Right now, Taiwan's status is what people call ambiguous. This means it is not clearly one thing or the other.

Taiwan is an island in East Asia. It has a very long history of different people living there. For over 6,000 years, indigenous people lived on the island. Later, many nations like Spain and the Netherlands held power there. Japan also ruled the island for a long time. This period changed the culture and the way people lived.

In 1949, things changed after a war in mainland China. A group called the Kuomintang, or KMT, moved to Taiwan. They led the Republic of China, which is also called the ROC. For many years, the KMT used strict rules called martial law. From 1949 until 1987, people could not easily talk about independence. This was a hard time for people who wanted new ideas.

Today, there are different groups with different plans. The Democratic Progressive Party, or DPP, supports independence. They believe Taiwan is already an independent country called the ROC. The KMT and the Pan-Blue Coalition want to keep things as they are. They use a plan called the "1992 Consensus." Meanwhile, the People's Republic of China says Taiwan belongs to them. They say any move toward independence could lead to a military response.

Changing the official status of Taiwan is a very big job. It is not something that can happen quickly or easily. To change the constitution, a large part of the parliament must agree. At least one-fourth of the members must start the process. Then, three-fourths of the members must attend a vote. Finally, the people of Taiwan must vote in a referendum.
