Today, Taiwan is a democracy. This means people vote for their leaders. The government has five main parts. One part is the Executive Yuan. This part carries out laws. Another part is the Legislative Yuan. This part makes the laws.

In the past, things were very different. For 38 years, Taiwan was under martial law. This was a rule that gave the leader much power. During this time, people could not easily speak their minds. Many people were treated unfairly if they disagreed with the leaders.

Things began to change in the 1980s. In 1987, the government lifted martial law. This allowed new political parties to form. In 1996, people voted directly for their president for the first time.

Now, two main parties lead the way. The KMT is one big party. The DPP is the other big party. These groups have different ideas about the future. This allows people to choose the path they want for Taiwan.
