A pogrom is a type of violent riot. These riots aim to hurt or force out a specific group of people. Most people use this word to describe attacks on Jewish people.

However, the term can also describe attacks against other ethnic or religious groups. It is a very serious kind of event. It often happens when a large group of people targets a smaller group. This smaller group is often left with no way to defend themselves.

There is no single way to define a pogrom. Some historians say it is a form of collective violence. This means many people act together against a minority group. Others say the state or government might allow it to happen. In some cases, the government might even support the rioters. This creates a big imbalance of power. The rioters feel they can act without being stopped by the law. This makes the violence very hard for the victims to escape.

The word comes from a Russian word. It means to destroy or to cause havoc. The term became common in English during the late 1800s. This was because of many attacks in the Russian Empire. One place where these happened was the Pale of Settlement. This was a specific area where many Jewish families lived. In 1881, after the death of Tsar Alexander II, over 200 pogroms occurred.

During World War II, the violence became even more widespread. In 1938, an event called Kristallnacht happened in Nazi Germany. At least 91 Jews were killed during that time. Over 7,000 Jewish businesses were also destroyed or damaged. In 1941, a pogrom in Iași, Romania, killed more than 13,200 Jews.

While many pogroms target Jewish people, other groups have suffered too. In 1921, a massacre in Tulsa destroyed a wealthy Black community.

In 1984, a massacre in India killed 3,000 Sikhs. In 2002, violence also happened against Muslims in Gujarat. These events show that this kind of violence can happen to many different people. Studying these moments helps us understand how groups have been treated unfairly. It shows why it is important to protect all people in a society.
