Ethnic cleansing is a serious term used to describe how people are forced out of their homes. The main goal is to make an area have only one type of group. This might be one specific race or one religion.

Leaders often want to make a society homogeneous, which means everyone is the same. This process aims to remove a group from a territory permanently. It is a very difficult and sad part of human history.

There are many ways that these forced removals happen. Some groups are moved through direct deportation or mass transports. Other groups are forced to flee because of threats or violence.

This can include destroying homes or property to make people leave. Sometimes, people are treated so poorly that they feel they must run away. The goal is to prevent these people from ever coming back. These methods are often used to clear an area for a different group.

This has happened many times throughout history in different places. In the 1860s, the Russian military moved the Circassian people from their lands.

A general named Nikolay Yevdakimov supervised these operations. Between 1609 and 1614, the Moriscos were expelled from Spain. In the 1930s, the Soviet Union moved Polish people from border zones. During World War II, Nazi Germany tried to remove Jews and Slavic people from Europe.

In 1947, at least 750,000 Palestinians were forced from their homes during the Nakba.

People use different words to talk about these events. The term "ethnic cleansing" became very common during the Yugoslav Wars in the 1990s.

Some researchers argue that these events should actually be called genocide. Raphael Lemkin was the person who created the word "genocide." He saw how Native Americans were displaced by settlers. Some historians believe "ethnic cleansing" is a better term for certain events. Because the words are different, people sometimes disagree on how to label history.

There is no single legal definition for ethnic cleansing in international law. However, the methods used are often considered crimes against humanity.

Some of these actions may also fall under the Genocide Convention. Sometimes, two different groups might commit these acts against each other. This is called mutual ethnic cleansing, like what happened between Greeks and Turks in the 1920s. Understanding these terms helps us learn about how nations and borders change. It shows how important it is for people to live together safely.
