A pogrom is a violent riot. It aims to hurt or force out a specific group. Most people use this word for attacks on Jewish people.

The word comes from a Russian word. It means to destroy or cause havoc. Many of these events happened in the Russian Empire. In the late 1800s, over 200 such attacks occurred. One big event was in Kishinev in 1903. In that city, 49 people died and many homes were lost.

Other groups have also faced this kind of violence. In 1984, 3,000 Sikhs were killed in a massacre. In 2002, violence happened against Muslims in India.

During World War II, many people suffered. In 1938, an event called Kristallnacht took place in Germany. Over 7,000 Jewish businesses were damaged or destroyed. In 1941, a pogrom in Iași, Romania, killed over 13,200 Jews. These events show how much harm can come from such riots.
