Denaturalization is when a country takes away a person's citizenship. This happens against the person's will.

In the past, this was like being sent away. In the late 1800s, new laws began to change how countries worked. Some countries took away citizenship from people who lived far away for many years. They did this to avoid helping poor people who returned home.

During World War I, many nations used these laws. They often targeted people based on where they were born. Some people lost their rights because of their political beliefs. This caused many people to become stateless. Stateless means they have no country to call home.

Today, denaturalization can happen for other reasons. Some people lose citizenship if they lie to join a country. This is called fraud. Other countries have rules about having two citizenships. If you join a new country, you might lose the first one.

After the 9/11 attacks, some governments used these laws more often. They used them to deal with threats to national security. Many people believe this can violate human rights.
