Sometimes people must leave their homes. This is called forced displacement. It is not a choice. People move because they are not safe.

Many things cause this. Armed conflict is a very common cause. People also move due to natural disasters. For example, a large tsunami in 2004 moved 1.7 million people.

Climate change can also cause displacement. It can lead to droughts. In 2011, a drought in East Africa made it hard to find food. Some people move because of human-made problems too. This includes violence from criminal groups.

There are different names for these people. If they stay in their own country, they are internally displaced persons. If they cross a border, they may seek asylum. If they are successful, they are called refugees. By the end of 2022, about 100 million people were forced to move.

Many groups work to help. They try to stop the causes of moving. They also help people in new places.
