Forced displacement happens when people must leave their homes. It is not a choice they make. They are forced to move away from their home regions. This can happen because of many different reasons. People might face conflict or violence in their towns. Some move because of human rights violations or persecution. This movement is often called forced migration or relocation. It is a very serious thing that affects many lives.

There are different ways to describe these people. If someone stays inside their own country, they are an internally displaced person. This is often called an IDP. If a person crosses an international border, they might seek asylum. If they are legally recognized, they are called refugees. A refugee has special legal protections in their new home. Some people move for money, but those are economic migrants. If people move because of big building projects, it is called development-induced displacement.

This topic has a long history. The term "displaced person" became common during World War II. After the war, many people moved from Eastern Europe. Many of these people were from Ukraine, Poland, or the Baltic states. They did not want to return to Soviet-dominated lands. In that time, the term sometimes meant people taken as prisoners. Today, the meaning has grown much larger. It now covers many more types of movement.

Many things can cause people to leave. Natural disasters like tsunamis or hurricanes are major causes. In 2004, a huge tsunami displaced 1.7 million people. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina moved over one million people in the United States. Climate change also plays a part. It can cause droughts or rising sea levels. Human-made causes are also very common. Armed conflict is a leading reason for people to flee. In Mexico, violence from criminal groups forces families to move.

By the end of 2022, about 100 million people were forcibly displaced. Most of these people live in the Global South. Many international groups now work to help. They try to prevent these movements from happening. They also work to help people in new regions. Some groups even gather evidence to help people in court. They want to hold those responsible for the displacement accountable. This helps make the world a safer place for everyone.
