Emigration

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Emigration is the act of leaving your home country to settle somewhere else. People who do this are called emigrants. You might hear the word immigration too. Immigration is when people move into a new country. Both words describe migration, but they look at it from different sides.

An emigrant leaves their old home. That same person is an immigrant when they arrive at their new home. It is all about which country you are looking at.

Experts study why people move using "push" and "pull" factors. Push factors are things that make people want to leave. These can be hard jobs or not enough land. Sometimes people leave because of war or unfair treatment.

Pull factors are things that attract people to a new place. A person might move for better schools or higher pay. They might also move to be near family members. These factors help explain why people choose to start a new life.

History shows many big waves of people moving around the world. During the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, millions left Europe. They went to live in the Americas and Oceania. They often fled poverty or violence.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, millions more left South China. This movement is known as the Chinese diaspora. These large groups of people changed the cultures of many new lands.

Some countries have very high rates of emigration. In Armenia, about 1.5% of the people leave every year. Between 1990 and 2005, between 700,000 and 1,300,000 people left the country. Many moved to places like Russia, France, or the United States.

People often move for work or to study. In Armenia, many people also move from small villages to the capital city, Yerevan. This shows how migration can happen both inside and outside a country.

Sometimes, governments make it very hard for people to leave. After 1668, the Qing Emperor banned people from moving to Manchuria. In 1918, the Soviet Union began making strict rules for travel.

In East Germany, leaders built the Berlin Wall to stop people from moving west. Before the wall was built in 1961, many educated professionals moved to West Germany. This caused a "brain drain" of young workers. The wall finally fell in 1989, allowing more freedom of movement.
