Naturalization is the way a person becomes a citizen of a new country. This usually happens after they are born in a different place.

To become a citizen, people often must follow specific rules. They may need to live in the country for many years. Some rules say they must learn the local language. Most people must also make a special promise. This is called an oath of allegiance. It means they promise to obey the laws of that land.

History shows many times when large groups became citizens at once. This is called mass naturalization. After World War I, many people had no country at all. They were called stateless persons. To help, some nations passed laws to give them citizenship quickly.

Rules can be different in every nation. For example, some people become citizens by marrying a local person. Others might join the military to help their new home. In some places, like Uruguay, the rules for citizenship are very unique. Most countries allow people to apply, but some do not have a path for naturalization at all.
