Statelessness

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Most people belong to a country. This is called having a nationality. But some people are stateless. This means no country sees them as a citizen.

There are many ways this can happen. One way is through birth laws. Some places give citizenship to anyone born on their soil. Other places give it based on blood. If a baby's parents do not fit these rules, the baby may be stateless.

Sometimes, rules are not fair to women. In 24 countries, women cannot pass nationality to their children. This can leave a child without a country. Other times, a country might stop existing. This happened when the Soviet Union fell apart in 1991.

It can also be hard to get papers. Many children are not registered at birth. Without a birth certificate, it is hard to prove who you are.

Some people even choose to leave their country. A famous scientist named Albert Einstein did this once. Today, many groups work to help. They want every person to have a legal home.
