There are different ways to get nationality. Some people get it from their parents. This is based on family ties. Other people get it because of where they were born.

This is common in many places in the Americas.

Some people can have two nationalities. This is called dual nationality. They belong to two different lands at once. Some people get nationality by marriage. They may also get it through naturalization. Naturalization is a set of steps to join a new country. A person might need to pass a test first. They might need to show they know the language.

Some people are stateless. This means no country says they are a national. This can be very hard for them. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights says everyone has the right to a nationality. This helps ensure people have a place to belong.
