A ghetto is a specific part of a city. It is an area where a minority group lives together. This often happens because of social, legal, or economic pressure.

Many ghettos are known for being very poor. They are often more impoverished than other parts of the city. Different parts of the world have different types of these areas. Each one has its own name and its own history. Some people use the word slum to describe very poor areas in developing countries. However, the word ghetto is often used for poor areas in developed countries.

How these areas form can vary a lot. Sometimes, laws force people to live in one spot. In other cases, social pressure keeps groups together.

In historical Jewish quarters, people often lived in very crowded spaces. As cities grew, these areas sometimes had narrow streets and very tall houses. Some ghettos were actually quite wealthy. For example, the Venetian Ghetto had some affluent residents. In many historical places, residents could follow their own traditions. They often had their own leaders and justice systems based on their culture.

History shows us many different types of ghettos. The word itself comes from Venice, Italy. In 1516, a decree forced Jewish people to live in a specific area.

This area was called the Venetian Ghetto. Linguists still debate where the name actually came from. Some think it relates to a word for a foundry. Others think it might come from a word for a street.

Over many centuries, the meaning of the word has changed significantly.

During World War II, the Nazis created a different kind of ghetto. They established more than 1,000 ghettos across Europe.

These were used to hold Jewish and Romani populations. These were not like the historical ghettos where people lived for generations. The Nazis used them as a step in a plan called the Final Solution. They wanted to control people before sending them to camps. Most of these were closed by 1943. A few, like the Budapest Ghetto, lasted until 1945.

Today, the term is used in many ways around the world. In the United States, it often refers to poor minority neighborhoods.

In Europe, it can refer to neighborhoods where Romani people live. In Denmark, the government used the word for certain housing areas. However, they stopped using it in 2021 because it felt unfair. They replaced it with the term "parallel societies." In France, people use the word banlieue for suburbs. Some of these suburbs are rich, while others are low-income areas.
