He was a lawyer, an author, and a government leader. He was born around 61 AD in a place called Novum Comum. This area is now known as Como in Northern Italy. His uncle, Pliny the Elder, helped raise and teach him. His uncle was a very famous and smart man. Pliny the Younger eventually became a very important part of Roman history. His life helps us understand how the Roman Empire worked.

Pliny had a very busy career in the Roman government.

He rose through many different jobs called the cursus honorum. He started as a member of the knight class. Later, he was elected to the Senate. He served as a judge and a prosecutor in many trials. He even held the high rank of consul in 100 AD. He later served as a governor in a province called Bithynia et Pontus. This province is located in what is now modern Turkey.

His life changed a lot when he was a young man. In 79 AD, the volcano Vesuvius erupted.

His uncle, Pliny the Elder, died while trying to rescue people from the eruption. Because of this, Pliny the Younger became his uncle's heir. He was also adopted by his uncle. This changed his name to Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus. He even took over his uncle's estate and property. This event was a major turning point in his life.

Pliny is most famous today for the many letters he wrote.

He wrote 369 letters, and 247 of them still exist today. Some of these were sent to Emperor Trajan. These letters give us a look at everyday life in the 1st century AD. He wrote two letters about the Vesuvius eruption. His details were so good that scientists use his name for that kind of volcano eruption. He also wrote about early Christians in his letters to the Emperor.

We can still read his words because people saved them.
