His father was named Hacı Mehmed. Piri grew up in a place with a strong sea tradition.

He began his life at sea as a child in 1481. He sailed on ships with his uncle, Kemal Reis. His uncle was a notable corsair. A corsair is a type of pirate that acts with state approval.

Making maps is a careful way of working. Piri Reis combined many different pieces of information. He used his own notes from many years of seafaring. He also used information from new European discoveries.

This suggested he did not plan to return home. He led a fleet of 60 ships to help in Yemen in 1547. Eventually, he faced a hard end after a retreat from Hormuz Island.

People found his work again many years later. His first world map was rediscovered in 1929. This happened during renovations at the Topkapı Palace in Istanbul.

The map is a point of national pride for Turkey. Some people had strange theories about the map. They thought it showed an ice-free Antarctica. However, studies show the map does not look like the coast of Antarctica.
