He was born in the city of Ceuta around the year 1100. During his youth, he traveled through North Africa and Al-Andalus. This area included what we now call Spain and Portugal. He even visited Anatolia when he was only sixteen years old. He later studied at a university in Córdoba. His many travels took him across Europe to places like Hungary and York. These journeys helped him learn a great deal about the world.

Al-Idrisi eventually moved to Sicily to work for King Roger II.

He spent eighteen years at the royal court in Palermo. During this time, he worked on a massive project. He created a book called the Kitab nuzhat al-mushtaq. This title means "A Diversion for the Man Longing to Travel to Far-Off Places." He also made a very famous map called the Tabula Rogeriana. To make his maps, he used beautiful colors. He used a blue called lapis lazuli to show the water. This color is still bright even today.

Making such an accurate map was a big job.

Al-Idrisi gathered information from many different sources. He used knowledge from Islamic merchants and explorers. He also used facts brought by Norman voyagers. He even checked oral reports from different people to make sure they matched. The king wanted a special version of the map. It was made on a solid silver disk. This disk was two meters in diameter. The map showed the entire Eurasian continent. However, it did not show all of Africa or Southeast Asia.

Al-Idrisi wrote about many interesting things in his records. He described trade in China and mentioned silk and iron. He even wrote about the Silla Dynasty in Korea. His writing helped other Arab merchants find new trade paths. He also wrote a unique medical dictionary. This book listed many plants and drugs used for healing. It included names in twelve different languages. Some of these words came from Hebrew informants. This shows how much different cultures shared knowledge during his time.

His work has left a lasting mark on history. Many scholars studied his maps and writings for years. Even today, his name is remembered in space. There is a feature in the Pluto system called the Al-Idrisi Montes.
