Cosmas later became a monk living in a Sinai cloister. He wrote a book called the Christian Topography. This book is very important to people who study history. It uses his own experiences to describe the world. He shared many details about the places he saw.

Cosmas had a very special idea about how the universe works. He did not believe the Earth was a round sphere. Instead, he thought the Earth and the ocean were flat.

He believed the heavens were shaped like a box with a curved lid. He thought the sun moved around a tall mountain in the north. This mountain helped explain why days change length in summer and winter. He wanted to show that his view matched the house of worship described to Moses.

We know a lot about his travels through his writing. Cosmas visited the Kingdom of Aksum in modern Ethiopia and Eritrea. He was in a place called Adulis around the year 525 AD. While there, he saw the King of Aksum getting ready for a military trip. He even wrote about old stone carvings called inscriptions. Some of these carvings have since disappeared and cannot be found by archeologists today. He also sailed near the island of Socotra.

His book gives us a window into the 6th century. He wrote about many different people and places in India. He mentioned the Malabar Coast where pepper grows.

Cosmas was the first traveler to write about Christians in Kerala, India. He also saw churches on the island of Ceylon, which is now Sri Lanka. He noted that some people there were sent from Persia. These details help historians understand how people moved and traded long ago.

Even though his ideas about a flat Earth were not popular, his work remains famous. Many educated people at the time disagreed with his view of the world. Some philosophers even wrote books to prove him wrong. However, his descriptions of trade and travel are still very useful. A modern writer named Umberto Eco even used him in a historical novel. Cosmas helps us connect with a world that has changed a great deal since his time.
